A visit by members of the Migration Group highlighted the work of the Library in recording the experience of immigration to Australia. The group, consisting of senior diplomats who meet informally on subjects related to migration, visited the National Library in March. Dr Barry York, Research Fellow at the EuropeAustralia Institute at Victoria University of Technology, conducted the members through the Librarys Oral History Collection. Dr York explained the processes of recording and preserving the migration experience through interviews and music. To illustrate his talk an interview with Arthur Calwell, Australias first Immigration Minister, was played. In it Calwell reminisces about his grandfather who migrated from the United States of America in the last century. |
