Two new senior appointments made

Margy Burn took up the position of Assistant Director-General, Australian Collections and Reader ervices in late June. Margy has worked as an Australiana specialist in academic and research libraries for over 20 years, since her first professional appointment at the Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide. She has held the positions of Director, Australian Research Collections and Collection Services (1993–99) and Mitchell Librarian (1988–93) at the State Library of New South Wales and was the foundation Mortlock Librarian at the State Library of South Australia from 1985 to 1988. Margy has had an active involvement in the archives and museum sectors, especially through her work on the Heritage Collections Council and its online working party. Margy’s professional interests include indigenous employment and service development, copyright law reform issues and the development of digital collections and services.

Pam Gatenby has been appointed to the position of Assistant Director-General, Collections Management. She has had a lengthy career in a number of senior positions in the National Library including publications, collection development, bibliographical control and reference services. Pam worked as the Library’s bibliographical standards librarian for some years and, in its early period, was with the Australian Bibliographical Network. Pam was responsible for the completion of one of the Library’s major projects, the Retrospective National Bibliography, 1901–50. Recent projects that she has undertaken include implementation of the Register of Australian Archives and Manuscripts (RAAM) and the development of the Library’s digitisation policy. She will continue responsibility for the Bringing Them Home Oral History Project. Pam will take up her new position in July on her return from a trip to the United States to attend the American Library Association Conference in New Orleans and to pay a visit to Library of Congress to discuss possible areas of cooperation.
