Acclaimed expatriate poet Peter Porter, read to a full house in the Friends Lounge in May

The Friends of the National Library share a common objective of supporting the Library, especially through their participation in the Friends’ program of events. This year those events include opportunities to meet published authors, take behind-the-scenes tours of the Library, and listen to excellent speakers. Three outstanding events yet to come this year will be an address on 7 August by Professor Michael Coper, Dean of Law and Professor of Constitutional Law at the ANU, followed by dinner at the Library’s Southbank restaurant; the celebration on 7 November of the literary achievements of Tim Winton; and a cultural weekend, 20–21 November, in the Crookwell region. Membership enquiries should be directed to Judy Heap, executive officer of the Friends, tel. (02) 6262 1698, email friends@nla.gov.au, or the Web site http://www.nla.gov.au/friends/.
