Warren Horton retires

Warren Horton & Miranda Crawley

A portrait of Warren Horton—legs crossed, wearing a pin-striped suit and his familiar gaze—was unveiled by former prime minister Gough Whitlam and the Minister for Communications, Technology and the Arts, Peter McGauran, at a formal dinner for 90 guests held in the Library’s foyer on 16 July. The portrait, by Sydney artist Jenny Sages, will become part of the Library’s Pictorial Collection.

After a series of farewells that stretched across the country, Mr Horton retired as Director-General of the National Library on 27 July. He professes no desire to evaluate his career but he will leave a lasting material legacy—details of which will be publicly announced at a later date—to Australia’s premier library.
