Chris Harrison retires
Chris Harrison with colleagues in the Rare Books stack
Chris Harrison retired from the Library in June. He was a librarian-in-training at the University of NSW Library School during 1971, and was recruited to the National Library after the completion of his course at the end of that year.
He commenced in Rare Books, with the then keeper of Rare Books, Ivan Page, and subsequently spent nearly all of his time working with the Librarys rare and valuable collections. His work over the years in the cataloguing of rare materials gave him that most valuable of assets, a depth of specialist knowledge, which he was willing to share with any staff member who sought his advice.
Following the incorporation of the Rare Book section into another program in 1987, Chris moved to Technical Services, where he continued to contribute his valuable cataloguing expertise. Among the many collections he has catalogued, or helped to catalogue, over the last 28 years are the David Nichol Smith Collection of eighteenth-century literature, the Fitzhardinge (early and rare printings), the Kashnor (political economy 16501870) and Pearce (radical literature) collections, and a large selection of rare Australian pamphlets.
