The collections

Changeover to Pinyin

The National Library is adopting the use of Pinyin in place of Wade-Giles for its cataloguing of Chinese materials from late September 1999. This is an historic step. In common with other major collections in Australia, the Library used the Wade-Giles romanisation of Chinese from the inception of the collection in the 1950s. More recently Pinyin, the official romanisation in China, has become increasingly used worldwide. The Library of Congress is planning a changeover to Pinyin in the United States in the near future and details on this are at http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/pinyin
