New director of Preservation Services

Colin Webb

Colin Webb

Colin Webb has recently been appointed as director of the National Library’s reservation Services Branch. Colin has worked as a preservation manager for the past 15 years, joining the National Library from the Australian Archives in 1993 as the manager of information Preservation. He has been acting in the director's position since the departure of Maggie Jones at the end of 1998.

The Preservation Services Branch was established to increase the treatment of collections and to facilitate a growing role in national and international preservation activities in support of the Australian library sector. This role will become more apparent as the branch reaches full staffing.

Colin has a strong interest in preservation of digital collections and has written many articles, conference papers and presentations on related issues. He has a lengthy background in paper conservation and bookbinding, although in recent years he has also developed his interest and experience in the preservation uses of reformatting techniques such as microfilming and digitisation. He was one of the authors of the National Library publication Guidelines for Preservation Microfilming in Australia and New Zealand released in 1998.
