Editor of Donald Friend diaries named
A major publishing initiative for the Library gathered momentum in early December with the announcement of Dr Anna Gray as the editor of the Donald Friend diaries. Her appointment was made from a strong field of applicants.
The diaries were acquired progressively by the Library in the 1980s and the first part of the 1990s. Excerpts from them will be published, under the auspices of the Morris West Trust Fund, in a four-volume set. The text is lively and generously, if sometimes irreverently, illustrated by the renowned artist.
Dr Gray, whose doctorate is in Fine Arts from the University of Melbourne is currently the director of the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of Western Australia. She has published widely both in Australia and abroad and has a long-standing interest in Donald Friends oeuvre having been involved with a major collection of his work while she was senior curator of Art at the Australian War Memorial from 1984 to 1995.
Editorial work will start early in the new year and is expected to last from 12 to 18 months.
Paul Hetherington, Director of Publications at the NLA describes the initiative as one of our most significant publishing projects of the next decade.
