Research funds for library projects

The Australian Research Council has provided funding for five cooperative projects involving the National Library.

There are four cooperative projects for 2000 in which the Library is a partner under the Research Infrastructure Equipment and Facilities Scheme (RIEF). Grants have been made for the Australian Literature Electronic Gateway (ALEG) ($300 000), the Australian Chinese Newspaper Web-Based Index Project ($100 000), a national database of electronic finding aids for Australian literary manuscript collections ($125 000), and the Endeavour Digitisation Project to test ways of linking primary research materials with secondary texts in a web environment ($300 000).

In addition, as part of Strategic Partnerships with Industry—Research and Training Scheme (SPIRT), almost $39 000 was awarded for the year 2000 as part of a three-year project. Library staff have joined researchers from the Australian National University, Griffith University and La Trobe University to examine Chinese and Japanese perceptions of Australia based on the National Library’s own extensive collections of both printed and special materials including manuscripts, pictorial works and oral history records.
