Using libraries for Korean studies
![]() |
HE the Korean Ambassador to Australia, Mr Shin Hyo-hun, presented a major donation of books for the Library's Korean Collection to the Director-General, Jan Fullerton, on 26 November A successful library session was held on 27 September during the First Korean Studies Association of Australasia (KSAA) Conference. Held at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, the session was well organised and the presentations were of a high standard. A booklet containing all papers was available on registration, a considerable achievement for an academic meeting nowadays. Andrew Gosling and Jung-Hee Fry of Asian Collections represented the National Library at the conference. |
The library session was attended by scholars and librarians and concentrated on readers needs. The topic was Using Libraries for Korean Studies in Australasia.
Andrew Gosling spoke about developments since the Survey of Users of Korean Materials: The Australia-Korea Research and Information Profile (http://www.nla.gov.au/asian/korus/) was published in 1998. In particular he stressed the continuing high priority the National Library is placing on its Korean collections and services, in line with the findings of the survey.
C.P. Tang of the National CJK Service explained the value of the CJK Service for users of Korean script materials.
Jung Sim Kim, Korean Studies Librarian at Monash University spoke about Korean resources on the Internet. Her talk is at http://www.lib.monash.edu.au/hss/asrl/kordb.htm
Discussion centred on grants and funding problems for Korean collections; access to Korean information for secondary schools and other non-academic users; and issues relating to romanisation of the Korean script.
The success of the library session owes much to the support of the conference organiser Dr Chung-Sok Suh and to Jung Sim Kim who arranged and chaired the meeting. The next KSAA conference will be at Monash University in 2001.
