In Their Image: Contemporary Australian Cartoonists

By Ann Turner

In Their Image: Contemporary Australian Cartoonists is based on biographical interviews conducted for the National Library of Australia’s Oral History collection. The 21 cartoonists featured include such luminaries as Bruce Petty, Patrick Cook, Ron Tandberg, Alan Moir, Cathy Wilcox, Michael Leunig, Mark Knight, Warren Brown, Peter Nicholson, Bill Leak and leading editorial cartoonists from Australia’s daily newspapers.

In these interviews the cartoonists talk about their upbringing and influences, the ways in which they work, their responsibilities and such issues as censorship. As Phillip Adams writes in the introduction, ‘Australia produces so many good cartoonists that you’d swear that our political life existed to mimic their cartoons.’ This book, which also reproduces works from each cartoonist, is both funny and serious. So too is the cartoonists’ art.
