Nick Smith has recently joined the National Library of Australia as its Copyright Officer. He will also serve as Executive Officer for the Australian Digital Alliance, and Copyright Adviser (Law and Policy) for the Australian Libraries Copyright Committee.

Nick has worked for the last four-and-a-half years in the Intellectual Property Branch of the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts. During that time, he worked on almost every copyright reform project that the Government has proposed. Perhaps the most important of these for libraries is the Copyright Amendment (Digital Agenda) Bill 1999.

A resident of Canberra for six years, Nick moved here from Adelaide. He is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and has a first class Honours Degree in English from Adelaide University. He is currently studying towards a Diploma in Information Technology (Software Development) at the Canberra Institute of Technology.

Nick Smith can be contacted at the National Library on (02) 6262 1273, fax (02) 6273 2545 or email: nsmith@nla.gov.au.
