The PANDORA (Preserving and Accessing Networked Documentary Resources of Australia) Archive recently reached a milestone. There are now more than 600 titles in the archive and it is growing rapidly.
Of these, a little over half have been archived as one-off gatherings. A major reason for this is that the title is static, for example a completed report or project such as Journal of Syms Covington (purl.nla.gov.au/nla/pandora/symscov). Or it could be that the site has been archived as an example of how the Internet is being used by Australians, for example the award-winning childrens site Trishans Oz (purl.nla.gov.au/slv/pandora/trishan).
The other items in PANDORA are being archived on a regular basis, ranging from weekly to annually.
These items may be electronic journals, for example Australian Humanities Review (purl.nla/gov.au/nla/pandora/ahr), which was one of the first titles ever archived, or sites of ongoing research interest that are being updated regularly, for example Antarctic CRC (purl.nla.gov.au/nla/pandora/antcrc).
Having passed the 600-title mark, we thought PANDORA deserved a facelift. The web site has been completely redesigned and the official launch, complete with a special PANDORA cake and a symbolic ribbon cutting by the designer Christian Coseru, took place on 28 June. The PANDORA home page (pandora.nla.gov.au/pandora) now provides subject access to the titles in the archive via 15 broad subject categories in addition to an alphabetic title listing. You will also find links to the following:
The State Library of Victoria has been a partner in PANDORA since 1998
and has contributed more than 50 titles to the archive. Just in time for
the launch of the new-look PANDORA, one of our newest partners, the State
Library of South Australia, archived its first title. It is Jacobs
Creek Tour Down Under (purl.nla.gov.au/slsa/pandora/tourdownunder)
and includes some wonderful images from the cycle race. Congratulations to
the staff at SLSA for their efforts in becoming part of the PANDORA
family!
