Collecting Advisory Committee meets
The National Library has established a CollectingAdvisory Committee to advise on the development of the Librarys collections and on directions in scholarly research and other developments relating to collecting.
The members of the committee are: Professor Susan Bambrick, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Southern Queensland; Professor James Fox, Director of the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University; Professor Malcolm Gillies, Executive Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, University of Adelaide; Professor Stuart Macintyre, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne; Rosemary Sorenson of the Courier Mail, Brisbane; and Professor Elizabeth Webby, Professor of Australian Literature, University of Sydney.
The committees inaugural meeting was held on 8 June under the chairmanship of Professor Stuart Macintyre. At the meeting National Library staff briefed committee members on a number of library activities including Australian and overseas collecting, collecting by Australian libraries, recent studies on the availability of scholarly resources in Australian libraries and the Librarys strategic directions. The Librarys PANDORA archive of online Australian publications was also demonstrated.
Issues on which the committee will work with the Library are wide-ranging. They include: building the Librarys collections, both Australian and overseas, relationships between the National Librarys collections and other collections within Australia, digitisation, the impact of online publishing and the de-selection and de-accessioning of library materials.
The committee will meet again later in the year and will work via email
between meetings.
