Library wins poll position for V8 Supercar race

V8 Supercar race

The National Library entered the world of high-speed motor racing as the GMC 400 V8 Supercar race hit the streets of Canberra on the June long weekend. The grounds of the Library offered ringside viewing for spectators as arch rivals Holden and Ford battled it out in Round 16 of the 2000 Shell Championship Series. Described as ‘an Australian history lesson on wheels’, the race brought together the nation’s best drivers in a new format of racing around some of the national capital’s best-known landmarks. The three-day spectacular drew a crowd of 50 000, with Holden driver Steven Richards taking out overall honours.
