In memory of a much-loved entertainer

Jan Adele, photographed during her interview with the National Library

Jan Adele, award-winning Australian entertainer, was interviewed at the National Library by Bill Stephens in 1992. Jan had a long career and the world of entertainment was saddened by her death this year at the age of 65.

The Oral History Collection has preserved and transcribed her interview, and it is available for access at Oral TRC 2859. In the interview, Adele recalls her earliest memories of performing publicly and her mother’s theatrical background. She talks about her marriages; the beginning of her professional career with a travelling canvas theatre variety show; taking up singing professionally and performing comedy routines. Her first film was Caddie, and she also appeared in High Tide with Judy Davis and Daisy and Simon with Sean Scully, winning Mo and AFI awards for her performances.
