Librarians gather in Canberra

Over 500 librarians and guests from all States and overseas gathered at the Library for an evening reception on 24 October as part of the ALIA 2000 conference. Jointly hosted by the Director-General, Jan Fullerton, ACT Urban Services Minister, Brendan Smyth and ALIA President, Mairead Browne, people mingled in the Foyer and the Exhibition areas with live music playing. ‘Trio Biblio’ comprising Library staff who specialise in Early English music and light classical, also performed Australian songs for the audience.

A feature of the evening was the launch by Barry Jones of the 5th edition of the ALIA publication, The Australian dictionary of acronyms and abbreviations by David J. Jones.

With the motto of Capitalising on Knowledge, the theme of the conference was The Information Profession in the Twenty-First Century. Library speakers included: Jan Fullerton, on the 21st century environment; Debbie Campbell, on PictureAustralia; Warwick Cathro, on digital libraries; Roxanne Missingham, on virtual reference services; Paul Hetherington, on publishing; and Nick Smith, on copyright.
