Exchange ideas

Some months ago three of my colleagues from Reference Services, National Library of New Zealand, visited the National Library of Australia. Before they left I suggested they ask if there was any chance of a staff exchange between our two institutions. I was surprised when the idea was received enthusiastically and I was asked if I would like to go to Canberra.

Since my arrival on the 20th of October I have attended the ALIA conference and have spent the last two weeks in Information Services. I have spent time on the desks; answered telephone enquiries, responded to email requests and had lots of opportunities to take a look at how the Library and some of its services operate.

I am a member of a working group looking at the opening hours of the National Library of New Zealand. At present the library is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. It has been suggested that the library should be open longer hours. Our working group is considering options and making recommendations. While I have been here I have talked to staff about this issue and am taking away some useful suggestions and ideas.

I have been well looked after by the staff in Information Services and it supports my beliefs about how wonderful Reference Librarians are. To all the other people in the Library who have gone out of their way to ensure I have had a productive and happy stay, thank you all.
