Wilson’s Promontory, circa 1860

Skull Rock & landing, Wilson's Promontory

A watercolour by John Black Henderson of Skull Rock, Wilson’s Promontory was acquired to document the landscape and fauna of Wilson’s Promontory in the 1860s. The watercolour depicts in the foreground a woman and two children feeding feral goats. This is possibly one of the earliest depictions of goats in the region. The goats are portrayed as charming additions to the landscape, attracting the sympathetic attention of the women and children. The painting was acquired at auction.
