National Library digitisation projects—November 2000

The following table includes details of current and recently completed digitisation projects at the National Library. Project

Description of material

Current status

Digitisation of the Sir Edmund Barton Manuscript collection

Correspondence, personal papers, press cuttings, photographs and other papers relating to the Federation campaign and the first Parliament. Approximately 3500–4200 images will result.

Pilot completed.
Soon to begin production.

New acquisitions; material most used (including material used in NLA exhibitions and publications); high profile collections (where copyright allows)—includes oil paintings, watercolours, prints, posters, photographs and some three dimensional objects.

Approx. 27 000 images to date and growth of about 5000 per year expected

Digitisation of oral history sound recordings

Preservation digitisation of existing oral history sound recordings, and acquisition of new recordings in DAT format. The digital recordings are not available for online access at this time.

Approx 1600 hours per year being added. Approx. 5000 hours of DAT in collection at 9 August 2000.

Co-operative Digitisation project (Ferguson)

Approximately seventy serial titles and four novels published between 1840–1845.

Digitisation completed.

Rare maps digitisation project

A pilot project digitised 25 maps. There are approx. 1000 rare maps.

A tender process is underway to provide digitisation services for this project.

South Seas project

Cooperative project, to produce scholarly digital editions of the journals relating to Cook’s first Pacific expedition, and those of the Dolphin voyage. The Endeavour journal, one component of this project, together with a transcript and other explanatory material, is available on CD-ROM.

Wills Diary

120+ pages of the original diary of the explorer, William John Wills.

Digitisation completed. Web site not yet available.

Documenting a Democracy

Cooperative project.
Images and transcripts of 99 documents identified as Australia’s key constitutional documents (one National Library document is included in this project).
