Belonging opens at State Library of New South Wales

Australia’s Governor-General, the Hon. Sir William Deane, visited the State Library of New South Wales on Wednesday 3 January to launch a major travelling exhibition entitled Belonging—A Century Celebrated before a crowd of 200 invited guests.

A Centenary of Federation ‘birthday gift’ to the nation, Belonging looks at 100 years of belonging and has been described as ‘a powerful story of nationhood’.

The exhibition has been developed by the National Library of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, the State Library of New South Wales and the State Library of Victoria and tells the story of nationhood through the magnificent heritage collections of these four prominent cultural institutions.

President of the Library Council of New South Wales, the Hon. Justice Mahla Pearlman, welcomed guests and introduced members of the official party including the Most Rev. Archbishop Peter Hollingworth, representing the National Council for the Centenary of Federation, Brian Keane CEO, of chief sponsor AAMI and Director of the State Library of New South Wales, Dagmar Schmidmaier.

Other special guests included the Minister for the Arts and the Centenary of Federation, the Hon. Peter McGauran, as well as the Director-General of the National Library, Ms Jan Fullerton.

Belonging will be on view in Sydney until late March when it moves to the State Library of Victoria from 5 May–22 July, National Library and National Archives (22 August–11 November), Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery (8 December 2001–4 March 2002) and Queensland Museum (12 October–8 December 2002).
