Library Active in Singapore and Jakarta
The National Library participated in a number of events in Singapore and Jakarta in April 2001. The Library maintained a stand at the International Library Expo (which was combined with the Asian International Book Fair) in Singapore during 2527 April. The Library promoted a range of its services including Kinetica and the National CJK Service.
The Trade Exhibition was held in conjunction with two conferences: ETLAS (Emerging Trends in Library and Archival Services) and PAL Asia (Publishing and Library Conference Asia). Dr Warwick Cathro, Assistant Director-General, Information Technology participated in the ETLAS conference and delivered the keynote address on the invited topic, Visions for Fundamental Change in Libraries and Librarianship for Asia Pacific, which can be found on the Librarys web site at www.nla.gov.au/nla/staffpaper/2001/cathro1.html.
Dr Cathro also represented the Library at the meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries of Asia and Oceania (CDNLAO) held in Singapore on 22 April.
En route to Singapore, Dr Cathro visited the Librarys Regional Office in Jakarta. He viewed the operations of the Office and discussed matters such as the efficient creation and distribution of MARC records for Indonesian publications. While in Jakarta, he also visited the National Library of Indonesia and the regional office of the Library of Congress.
The Library was also represented in Singapore by Lawrie Salter (Stack Services), Oliver Mann (Regional Office, Asia), Papiya Chakravarti and CP Tang (Kinetica Branch). In addition to supporting the trade exhibition, these staff also visited the National Library of Singapore and some of its public library branches, to discuss areas of potential cooperation and to see at first-hand the use of technologies such as radiofrequency labels used to manage book circulation. There was also the opportunity to visit the National Library Boards Library Supply Centre and the Singapore Mapping Unit.
