A Century Celebrated

Griffith Marsupial

Gerrit Fokkema. Griffith Marsupial, Frank and Pierina Bastianon (detail) 1987
State Library of New South Wales

The National Library of Australia has two exhibitions starting on 22 August 2001 and continuing until 11 November 2001.

Belonging: A Century Celebrated will be shared between the National Library of Australia (‘People’ section of the exhibition) and the National Archives of Australia (‘Place’ section of the exhibition) and will be open from 9 am to 5 pm daily in both places.

The exhibition asks the questions what sort of country do you want to belong to? What ties us together as Australians? What tears us apart? Since Federation in 1901, people have felt that they belonged or did not belong in Australia for many different reasons. Belonging: A Century Celebrated explores some of the ways people experienced ‘belonging’ in Australia in the twentieth century. Drawing on the extensive collections of the National Archives of Australia, the National Library of Australia, the State Library of New South Wales and the State Library of Victoria, this exhibition challenges viewers to consider the question: Where do I belong? An online exhibition can be found at www.belonging.org

Between the Sheets: A Century of Australian Music is an exhibition exploring Australia’s popular music. From rags to riffs, the National Library holds thousands of pieces of sheet music that fit under the category of Australian popular songs of the last 100 years. Between the Sheets tells a tale of amateur musicians and singalongs, professional songwriters and publishers, of classic songs, unknown gems and disposable ditties, bringing them to life through the music itself, as well as instruments, ephemera, photographs, interviews and recorded sound and audio-visuals. It’s the story of a country’s remarkable musical journey through a century, and it lurks between the sheets.
