Overseas Serials Conversion Project

Nikki White & Jennifer Howlett

In March this year the National Library of Australia completed a project to put holdings data for all its Australian serials online. The Library has now commenced a similar project to convert its manual record-keeping system for overseas periodicals to machine-readable form.

This will make it easier for readers and remote users to see exactly which issues of a periodical the library actually holds. In addition, many older periodicals, which previously had no National Library holdings or even a record on Kinetica, will now be recorded on Kinetica and the Library’s online catalogue.

The project will take several years, as there are many more overseas serials than Australian ones. Much time has and will be spent at the Library’s two remote sites at an industrial suburb in southern Canberra, the Annexe and the Warehouse, where all the pre–1991 overseas serials are housed. So far the team, headed by Nikki White has converted over 500 overseas serial titles.
