Strategic Partnership to Expand Access to Dance Resources

Ausdance and the National Library of Australia are proud to announce the formation of a strategic partnership to expand and develop an online directory of Australian dance resources. The partnership will build on the success of the Keep Dancing! project which was a joint venture between Ausdance, the National Library and ScreenSound Australia and was funded by the Australia Council. Keep Dancing! located and acquired a vast array of dance resources for the Australian Dance Collection. An online directory was created to make dance resources held by the National Library of Australia and ScreenSound Australia accessible to performing arts researchers, dance practitioners and the wider national and international communities.

The National Library will employ a curator until December 2002 to enrich the coverage of the Directory www.nla.gov.au/ausdance to include full text articles, links to other dance-related web sites and additional descriptive entries of dance resources held in collecting institutions. The curator will also build the Australian Dance Collection through the addition of new materials—personal papers, oral history recordings, programs of performances, film, video and photographs.

‘Inclusion of artists’ work in the online directory is one way of encouraging the transfer of dance-related materials from private ownership to publicly accessible collections,’ said Jan Fullerton, Director-General, National Library of Australia. ‘It is the fundamental way in which the Australian Dance Collection will continue to grow and be known and used.’

The partnership has been assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
