Kinetica Annual Users Meeting 2001

Resource sharing, resource discovery and cataloguing of electronic resources were the key issues discussed at the Kinetica Annual Users Meeting held on the Gold Coast on 26 and 27 July.

Cheryl Brickell, the Library Manager of Noosa Library who chaired the meeting, said ‘it was a joy to chair a meeting where everyone contributed to informed debate about the future strategic directions of the Kinetica Service’.

As at past meetings, highlights for participants were the panel sessions and guest speakers who shared experiences and information relevant to Kinetica.

Opening presentations by Helen Livingston, Chair, Kinetica Users Committee and Roxanne Missingham, Assistant Director-General Resource Sharing, National Library of Australia (NLA) emphasised that the Kinetica service was now well established. Contributions to the National Bibliographic Database (NBD) have significantly increased with 3.23 million holdings and 659 906 original catalogue records contributed in 2000–01, the highest ever level of contribution to the national database.

Two panel sessions were held. In the first on cataloguing issues, Ann Huthwaite (Queensland University of Technology) and Chair of the Joint Steering Committee for revision of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR) provided an overview of the development of AACR2. Beverley Crane (University of New South Wales) shared the experience of the University of New South Wales in providing access to electronic resources through cataloguing all electronic resources onto the NBD. Lloyd Sokvitne (State Library of Tasmania) described the use of metadata for Tasmanian government online material and Rob Walls (NLA) described the Library’s initiatives in providing for management of electronic resources, particularly in the use of the NBD for resource sharing and record sharing.

The panel session on resource sharing included a presentation by Dr Toby Burrows (University of Western Australia) on the national resource sharing system. Tom Ruthven (NLA) described the interlibrary loan and document delivery (ILL/DD) benchmarking study and systems compliance with ILL ISO standards. Melanie Kammerman (Northern Sydney Area Health Service Consortium) outlined the benefits of using consortia to access Kinetica.

Issues for Kinetica including the Kinetica Progress Review were discussed during the general meeting and in smaller groups. The Web Input form was launched at the conference, with a call for pilot participants in the use of the form. This will enable libraries to more easily add original records to the NBD for electronic resources.

Reports given and discussed at the meeting included the Kinetica report on the 2000–01 activities and outcomes, the Kinetica Expert Advisory Group on Access to Electronic Resources report, the Australian National CJK (Chinese Japanese Korean) System report and the Kinetica Subject Headings Review Panel report. All reports are online and can be accessed from www.nla.gov.au/kinetica/aum/aum01schedule.html.

The next Kinetica Annual Users Meeting will be in Sydney on 8–9 August 2002.
