Shannons 2001 National Motoring Tour Memorabilia

One of the historic vehicles that took part in the tour

The Shannons 2001 National Motoring Tour, a Centenary of Federation event attracted 1200 pre-1976 vehicles and motorcycles from all over Australia to the National Capital for a four-day motoring festival in April 2001.

The National Library had the honour of having the memorabilia from the Tour presented to the Library in June 2001, by the Director of the Tour Dr David Marshall-Martin. Dr Marshall-Martin said ‘tour entrants will be delighted to know that the motoring memorabilia will be held at the National Library, where the material will be made available for future generations to access.’

Some of the items included in the collection are a Shannons Tour Medallion featuring the Tour logo (a map of Australia); a numbered issue of only 250 posters produced by portraitist, Brian Caldersmith, featuring 24 watercolours of various vehicles and signed by the artist together with the signatures of Peter Brock and Peter Wherrett, the two Ambassadors-at-Large for the Tour; a copy of Wheels of Australia edited by Peter Wherrett, motoring journalist, which contains photographs and details of the 1200 entrant vehicles in the Tour. The Library’s edition features most of the entrants signatures. Other memorabilia include a lapel badge depicting the Tour logo distributed to each entrant and supporter of the Tour and an ‘In Appreciation’ trophy presented to 92 volunteers.
