Reference Whiz Moves Across the Lake

Rod Stroud

Rod Stroud, one of the National Library’s longest-serving and well-liked reference librarians, left the Library in September. He has moved across Lake Burley Griffin to the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) Library, where he accepted a promotion to the position of Manager, Client Services.

In April 1975, Rod joined the National Library and worked in a variety of areas including the Film Archive section (now ScreenSound Australia), the ACT Public Library Service, and then finally, moved to the Library’s Reference section in 1979.

Rod’s expertise in genealogy was demonstrated in his work as the joint compiler with Judith Cannon of Genealogy and Heraldry in the National Library of Australia, published in 1988.

He also produced many of the library’s Readers’ Guides on government publications. Rod’s most recent achievement was the implementation of IRIS (Integrated Research and Information Service) in the Library in 1999. This provides access to a number of web sites and databases. For his continued commitment and dedication to reference services at the National Library he received one of the Library’s Australia Day Awards in 2000.

Rod was farewelled by colleagues from all parts of the National Library with a sumptuous morning tea on 7 September.
