Workshop on Publications in the Pacific Region
Chris Foster attended the Workshop on Universal Availability of Publications in the Pacific Region held at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in New Caledonia 1721 September 2001. The workshop was jointly organised by the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) and the SPC with financial support from the Government of France and the National Library of Australia. Significantly, the workshop brought together representatives from the North and South Pacific as well as the English-speaking and French-speaking countries in the Pacific. There were 26 participants from 10 countries present while several others from the North Pacific provided reports but were unable to attend due to transportation difficulties arising from the events of 11 September.

Each country representative presented a report addressing a series of questions about the nature of publishing, bookselling and library activities in each country. Other presentations and discussions focused on issues and problems facing libraries and publishers in the region. The workshop developed a number of recommendations that provide a framework for improving access to publications, information and resources including:
