New Director, Reader Services

Elizabeth Dracoulis

Elizabeth Dracoulis, Director, Reader Services

In September, Elizabeth Dracoulis joined the Library as Director, Reader Services. Elizabeth has previously held positions at the Australian National University Library, the University College Library of the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Australian Bureau of Statistics Library, where she was involved in the establishment of the Library Extension Program.

For the past eight years, she has been a senior member of staff at the Australian War Memorial. During this period, the Memorial undertook a major redevelopment of its galleries and services. As the Manager of the Research Centre, Elizabeth led the strategic development of reference and information services. This involved the refurbishment of collection storage areas and public research facilities and the creation of a significant range of online resources, including digitisation of high-use and fragile documents from the Printed and Written Records collection. These new services, enhanced online access to the collections, and have proved to be enormously popular with researchers and the general public both onsite and via the Web.

During her career in the library, archives and museum sectors, Elizabeth has been active in the University College and Research Libraries Section of ALIA, was the co-convener of the inaugural conference of the Reference and Information Services Section (RAISS) and was a member of the national council of the Australian Council of Libraries and Information Services (ACLIS) from 1997–1998. She is a member of the Australian Society of Archivists.

From December 2000, for a period of four months, Elizabeth was seconded to the National Library’s Coordination Support Branch to assist in the establishment of the collection digitisation projects. Her appointment as Director, Reader Services is therefore a welcome return, as well as an introduction to new challenges in the reference and information services area.
