Kinetica Expert Advisory Groups

When Kinetica was implemented in 1999 the National Library of Australia anticipated a need to quickly obtain expert advice on specific topics in order to develop Kinetica to meet the changing needs of Australian libraries. To obtain this advice Kinetica establishes Expert Advisory Groups (EAG) as needed. Members of the groups may include Kinetica users or other experts with knowledge of a specific topic. Expert Groups usually interact via teleconference and use email to exchange ideas and documents. To date eight expert groups have been established. The following groups have already concluded their work:

Access to Electronic Resources
Application of ABN Standards Committee Resolutions
Cataloguing Workflows
Document Supply Service
Reference and End User Services

Three advisory groups are currently active:

Authority Record Delivery
Cataloguing of Electronic Resources
Subject Headings Review Panel

Authority Record Delivery

Kinetica is keen to improve the sharing of authority data between Australian libraries. This EAG was established in September 2001 to provide advice on improving the delivery of authority records by:

The members of this EAG are: Liz Neumann (University of Melbourne), Nancy Li (University of New South Wales), Susanne Moir (State Library of New South Wales). Elisabeth McDonald (Australian Film, Television and Radio School), Glenda Henderson (UNILINC), Patricia Scott (University of Adelaide and Kinetica Advisory Committee Representative), Deirdre Kiorgaard (National Library), with Margaret Kennedy (Kinetica) as the Convenor/Secretary.

The EAG has conducted a survey of library staff to determine their requirements for the support of authority data in both Kinetica and library management systems. The EAG also conducted a survey of library system vendors to determine the current levels of support for authority data in library management systems and their plans for development. A report of both surveys is provided on the Kinetica web site at: www.nla.gov.au/kinetica/eag_ad_reports.html

This EAG is expected to present its final report to the Kinetica Advisory Committee in August.

Cataloguing of Electronic Resources

This EAG was established in January to provide a framework for the development of guidelines to support the reporting of bibliographic records and holdings for electronic resources to the NBD.

The membership of the group is: Ann Huthwaite (Queensland University of Technology), Jan Maslen (La Trobe University), Anne Beaumont (State Library of Victoria), Marjory Taylor (WA Dept of Health), Julie Whiting (National Library), Bemal Rajapatirana (Kinetica), Robert Walls (Kinetica).

The terms of reference of the group are:

Subject Headings Review Panel

This EAG not only has a different name but is also the only one that currently has an on going timeframe.

The Subject Headings Review Panel (SHRP) has been established to provide expert advice and guidance when required on:

The Subject Headings Review Panel consists of five members: Joan Moncrieff (Deakin University), Alana Garwood-Houng (AIATSIS), Deirdre Kiorgaard (National Library), Judith Purser (University of Melbourne), Bemal Rajapatirana (Kinetica) as the Convenor/Secretary.

The SHRP held its first teleconference on in May 2001 and meets approximately three times per year. Currently the main activities of the SHRP are:
