The Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mr Richard Smith, accompanied by Mrs Smith, made his first official visit to the National Library of Indonesia in April. Prior to the visit, the National Library of Australia’s Regional Officer in Jakarta, Oliver Mann, briefed the Ambassador on the salient aspects of the long association between the two national libraries.

At the National Library of Indonesia the Ambassador met with the Director, Mr Dady Rachmananta, and senior staff members Mr Paul Permadi, Mr Gardjito and Ms Dina Isyanti, who had all visited the Library in Canberra in recent months.

Mr Rachmananta gave an overview of current projects at the National Library of Indonesia, including the draft of a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Library of Australia. Ms Dina Isyanti followed with a brief report on her recent work experience visit to the Library in Canberra under the Regional Cooperation Scheme. The visitors were then taken to a special viewing of the five Indonesian exhibits that had recently been on display at the Treasures from the World’s Great Libraries exhibition in Canberra. The visit concluded with the Ambassador commenting on the importance of cultural links between Australia and Indonesia, and he presented Mr Rachmananta with a copy of a recent Library publication, the first volume of The Diaries of Donald Friend.
