Highlighting Serials
Serials are the life-blood of the National Library’s collections, and the Library’s
Serials Section has completed a highly successful financial year building and
providing access to the collection. Accessioning and cataloguing totals have
been above the anticipated targets in most areas of activity.
Some highlights of the year are:
- A continuing flow of offers, from Australian libraries and private individuals,
of a variety of serial runs and issues which the Library can use to fill gaps
in its serial collection
- An increased emphasis on the claiming of Australian serial issues with a
program to increase the proportion of the collection covered by automatic
claiming
- A subscription to the Ebsco Academic Search Premier Service, which will
give Library users access to 3200 full-text electronic serials. Separate
catalogue records for all of these titles have been obtained from Ebsco, loaded
to Kinetica with some enhancements
and added to the National Library’s OPAC
- Continuing work on converting the remaining overseas serial titles held
in card catalogues to machine-readable form for inclusion in the Library’s
computer catalogue. Over 3500 serial titles have been converted in the current
phase of this project
- Over 400 electronic serials are now archived in the National
Collection of Electronic Resources by the National Library and partner
agencies
- A busy time for the ISSN
Agency with more than 1400 ISSNs allocated to publishers. Pre-publication
records for serials that have been allocated an ISSN are now routinely added
to Kinetica.
