New Acquisition:
John Richardson Glover’s Sketchbook of Properties in the Longford Region of Tasmania

Norley Cottage, G. Arthur, Esq. [between 1850 and 1859] by John Richardson Glover

The Library’s documentation of the European settlement of Tasmania was enhanced by the acquisition at auction of a sketchbook, attributed to John Richardson Glover, of the properties in the Longford region, circa 1850–1859. The sketchbook comprises 15 drawings in ink and wash on paper, of approximate size 12.2 x 21.8 cm.

First settled by Europeans in 1807, Longford is a small town located 24 km south-west of Launceston. The drawings of the Longford region, mostly with inscriptions, record the design and architectural features of a variety of buildings including the Berridale Inn, Saltmarsh; Brewery of Mr. Noake’s, Lake River; Panorama of street scene; Georgian style house; steam mill and the Episcopalian church.

The drawings illustrate the changes in the landscape following European settlement, the importance of the built environment to the settlers, and something of the industries and services in the town.

The drawings are attributed to John Richardson Glover (1790–1868), the son of John Glover (1767–1849). The sketches complement the Library’s sketch by J.R. Glover of the parsonage at Evandale, which is dated 28 February 1857, and gives an indication of the date the artist was active in the area.

Digital photographs of the sketches can be viewed on Pictures Catalogue, the Library’s pictorial Internet catalogue at www.nla.gov.au/catalogue/pictures/
