Visit by the Australian Ambassador to East Timor

Mr Paul Mr Paul Foley views a display on East Timor in the Asian Collections Reading Room

Mr Paul Foley is Australia’s first Ambassador to the newly independent nation of East Timor. As Ambassador Designate he visited the National Library of Australia in June prior to taking up his post.

Mr Foley had discussions with the Director-General, Jan Fullerton and other senior staff about the development of libraries in East Timor. He also visited the Asian Collections Reading Room to view a special display of publications from and about the new nation. These included newspapers and magazines which are being supplied regularly to the National Library through the Australian Embassy in Dili, posters and pamphlets produced for the pre-independence elections, as well as books and serials published in Indonesia, Australia and elsewhere. The April 2002 issue of Gateways contains an article by Oliver Mann, the National Library’s Regional Officer, Asia, who undertook a field trip to Dili earlier in the year.
