The National Library of Australia has acquired a complete set of Early English Newspapers on microfilm. Most of the newspapers in this major research collection date from the eighteenth century, although some seventeenth century corantos, diurals and newsbooks are covered. The collection consists of the amalgamation of two notable British newspaper collections, the Burney Collection of the British Library in London, and the Nichols Collection of the Bodleian Library at Oxford. It contains a number of important early titles such as the British Journal, Daily Courant, Daily Gazetteer, Lloyd’s Evening Post, London Gazette, and Whitehall Evening Post.
The collection is an important source for the study of contemporary
history, literature, drama and philosophy. It is not held in its entirety by
any other Australian library, and the National Library plans to add records
for this collection and holdings for each title to the National Bibliographic
Database.
