New Version of the PANDORA Digital Archiving System Released
On 1 August the National Library released the second version of the PANDORA Digital Archiving System, the web-based management system used by the Library and partner organisations, including all mainland State libraries and ScreenSound Australia, to build the PANDORA Archive.
The digital archiving system was developed in-house using WebObjects software (www.apple.com/webobjects/). The first version was implemented in June 2001, as reported in the August 2001 edition of Gateways www.nla.gov.au/ntwkpubs/gw/52/p25a01.html.
Following the initial release of the digital archiving system, development work began on the second version.
The digital archiving system was developed to make the work of building the PANDORA Archive more efficient by automating many of the processes involved and by allowing the work to be done by all partner organisations using a common web-accessible management system. In order to use it, partner organisations only require a web-browser (Internet Explorer 5.5 or above), sufficient memory on their PCs, and WebFolders installed if using Windows 98 or NT. No additional software is required as the digital archiving system is hosted on a National Library server.
The new version includes many significant enhancements including:
All PANDORA partner organisations are now using version 2. In early September 2002, Electronic Unit Supervisor Paul Koerbin provided training using version 2 to staff at the two newest PANDORA partner libraries, the State Library of Queensland and the Northern Territory Library and Information Service.
