AusStage: Gateway to the Australian Performing Arts

The AusStage gateway became available in pilot mode in October 2002. The key feature of the site at the moment is the Index of Australian Performing Arts Events. While still a prototype, there is significant depth of content already available for searching.

The index provides a record of performing arts events in Australia. For example, it is possible to search for David Williamson’s play Soulmates performed by the Sydney Theatre Company, and find details of performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Wollongong, Newcastle and Canberra. Other search options include the capability to search by an extensive list of venues. The advanced search provides further means of refining searches by genre, content, playwright, director, or company.

Entries for events held since January 2001 have been indexed by a team of people located around the country. Details of performing arts events and associated reviews and articles indexed in the Australia and New Zealand Theatre Record from 1986 to June 1993 have been added. A selection of theatre programs from the collections of the National Library of Australia and the Wolanski collection at the University of New South Wales have been indexed and work continues to add data retrospectively.

AusStage is supported by a grant from the Australian Research Council through the Research Infrastructure and Equipment Fund, and contributions from the eight participating universities. The project is led by Flinders University. The web site can be located at <www.ausstage.edu.au/index.htm>.
