The National Library awards annual summer scholarships for talented young scholars undertaking research in Australian history or Australian literature. The scholarships were established following a donation from former National Library Council Member, the late Norman McCann. Summer Scholars are supported to spend six weeks at the Library researching a topic of their choice. The 2003 Summer Scholars are Sarah Irving, Ruth Nicholls and Joanne Archer. Sarah has recently completed an Honours degree in History at the University of Sydney and will research the cultural history of Australian republicanism in the 1890s. Ruth completed an Honours degree in History at the ANU in 2002 and will research leadership, creativity and problem solving in Indigenous communities based on the Seven Years On oral history project with Indigenous leaders. Joanne is currently completing a Master of Library Science and Master of Arts in History at the University of Maryland, and she will research the Wakefield immigration scheme 1830–1850.
