In March a group of senior staff from the National Library flew across the Nullarbor to visit Western Australia. One of the major activities was a half-day presentation to over 100 West Australian librarians that was held at the State Library of Western Australia. The presentations covered the Library’s strategic directions by Jan Fullerton, Director-General; Information Technology architecture by Warwick Cathro, Assistant Director-General, Information Technology; Digitisation and Resources Discovery Initiatives by Jasmine Cameron, Assistant Director-General, Coordination Support; Margy Burn, Assistant Director-General, Australian Collections and Reader Services; Dr Marie-Louise Ayres, Project Manager, Music Australia; Collecting by Pam Gatenby, Assistant Director-General, Collection Management; Resource Sharing by Roxanne Missingham, Assistant Director-General, Resource Sharing; and Public Programs by Helen Kon, Assistant Director-General, Public Programs.

The West Australian librarians attending the presentations expressed significant interest in the Library’s digitisation program. They were also very interested in working with the Library to improve access to resources held in libraries, digital and printed materials.

A reception held at the Lawrence Wilson Gallery at the University of Western Australia provided an opportunity for National Library Friends, associates, collection donors and library professionals to meet with Library staff. It was a convivial event hosted by the Chair of the National Library Council, Sir James Gobbo and the Deputy Chair of Council, Professor Alan Robson.

While in Perth, visits were made to many libraries and cultural institutions to discuss future collaborative activities.  A number of Western Australian organisations expressed interest in participating in PictureAustralia, Australia Dancing and the National Bibliographic Database.

The Library works closely with cultural institutions around Australia and has also led in the development of services such as online digital access and delivery projects.  By engaging with the library community information on the Library’s strategic services can be exchanged.  The Western Australian visit is part of a program of state visits by senior Library staff.
