In February, two long serving senior officers—Peter Haddad and Andrew Gosling—retired from the Library. Both served the Library with distinction over a period of 30 years.
At the time of his retirement Peter Haddad was Director of the Technical Services Branch, a position he held for four years. Before this, he held many different positions in the branch, specialising in particular in cataloguing and development of the overseas collections. Peter is an internationally acknowledged cataloguing expert. He has served on the editorial board of Cataloguing and Classification Quarterly, was an active participant in the Format Variation Working Group of the Joint Steering Committee for the Revision of Anglo American Cataloguing Rules, and also served on the Australian Committee on Cataloguing for many years.
In addition to his cataloguing expertise, Peter developed an excellent working knowledge of the Library’s extensive collections of overseas publications and was relied upon by the whole Library to provide information on the history and content of the collections. Over the years he played a major role in developing collecting policy and shaping it to reflect changing information needs.

Andrew Gosling’s area of expertise is Asian studies. At the time of his retirement he held the position of Director, Asian Services. His career was spent for the most part working with the Library’s rich collections of Asian language materials. From 1978 to 1981 he managed the Library’s Indonesian Acquisition Office in Jakarta. Andrew has a working knowledge of several Asian languages and during his career was very influential in developing the Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian collections in particular. He has also written extensively about the collections and much of this information is available through the Library’s web site.
Andrew played a very active role in Asian studies in Australia and represented the Library at many important Australian and overseas conferences. His subject knowledge earned him the respect and gratitude of many researchers who have used the Library’s Asian language collections over the years.
Peter and Andrew were a pleasure to work with and were widely respected throughout
the Library and by colleagues from other institutions. They will be missed,
both for their professional expertise and also for their considerable personal
attributes.
