A Stimulating Conference: ‘Travellers’ Tales—Writing about Journeys, Journeys through Writing’
On 11–12 April the National Library held a very successful two-day conference exploring the themes of travel writing, life journeys, exploration, and journeys of the mind.
Entitled Travellers’ Tales: Writing about Journeys, Journeys through Writing, the Conference brought together many different speakers—all taking as their starting point the meaning of the word ‘journey’. Speakers included Ros Pesman, Peter Steele, Ian Britain, Delia Falconer, Glenda Adams, Alan Gould, Tom Griffiths, Arnold Zable, Penny Russell, Tony Wheeler, Linda Jaivin, Myra Jean Bourke, Anna Haebich, Doreen Mellor, Barry Hill, Kim Mahood, Diane Armstrong, Colin McPhedran, and Brij Lal. Over 200 participants heard a range of accounts—real world journeys of travelling to Antarctica, the forced removal of Indigenous children from their homes, fleeing war-torn Burma and Europe—or, more metaphorically, ‘journeys’ into the imagination and the creative process. At its conclusion, the Conference had taken its participants on many
travels, and perhaps even inspired the beginning of new voyages.
