Norman McCann Summer
Scholarships 2004
Call for Applications
The National Library is calling for applications for the Norman McCann Summer Scholars Program for 2004.
This will be the third year that the Library has run the Program. In 2002, the inaugural scholars—Sally Young, Andrew Greenwood, and Joanna Richardson—respectively researched federal electoral campaigns, Australian musical albums, and private diaries and letters in the Library’s Collection. At the start of this year, the 2003 scholars—Ruth Nicholls, Joanne Archer and Sarah Irving—researched 1890s republicanism, Indigenous leadership, and E.G. Wakefield’s emigration scheme. (They describe the experience in the June 2003 issue of National Library of Australia News.)
The Norman McCann Summer Scholarships, funded by a donation from a former National Library Council member, are designed to enable outstanding young Australian scholars under the age of 30 to undertake six weeks research in Australian history and literature in the Library’s collections. The scholars receive assistance with living expenses, return airfares, and accommodation at the Australian National University. While in Canberra they are also able to forge stronger relations with other national institutions running similar programs—the Australian War Memorial, and the National Archives of Australia.
The library community is encouraged to publicise the scholarships to those clients who might be eligible. Applications close on 13 June 2003.
