Loansome Doc Service

Do you ever need to order full-text articles cited in the MEDLINE database? If so, the Loansome Doc Service may be helpful to you.

What is Loansome Doc?
Loansome Doc is a document delivery service set up by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in the United States of America. The National Library of Australia (NLA) is a participant in NLM’s DOCLINE service, and a Loansome Doc supplier in Australia and the South Pacific region.

How does Loansome Doc work?
Loansome Doc users in Australia and the South Pacific region place their order online from PubMed or the NLM Gateway. The orders automatically come to the National Library of Australia through DOCLINE. We will first attempt to supply from our collections, however, if we don’t hold the item, we will then route the request to NLM, who send the requested copy via Ariel overnight. We then forward the copy to our Loansome Doc users through email, fax or post as requested.

How do I use Loansome Doc?
You or your users can order online from Pubmed or NLM’s Gateway after you have registered with both NLA and NLM.

You fill out the NLA’s Loansome Doc User Registration Form first. On receiving your registration form, we will provide you with a unique identifier, and you can then register with NLM.

Alternatively, you can always send your interlibrary loan orders to us through the Kinetica Document Delivery system (KDD), email, fax or post.

What are the costs?
If the copies can be supplied from the National Library of Australia’s collections, the cost will be $A13.20 per copy. If the copies are supplied from other sources, including NLM, the cost will be $A27.00 per copy. If express post or fax delivery is required, there will be an additional $A6.60 for express post and $3.30 for interstate fax delivery.
