Libraries of Asia Pacific (LAP) Directory For some years now the National Library has maintained a directory of libraries in the Asia Pacific region. The Libraries of the Asia Pacific (LAP) Directory includes over 400 libraries, many of them small, and many of many of them not having web access. The directory has been redeveloped by the National Library to give member libraries the ability to update and amend their own entries where web access is available. The new site was unveiled in mid-May, at <www.nla.gov.au/lap>, and will look quite familiar to users of the Australian Libraries Gateway. The site features a search facility, updated information pages, a form allowing libraries not in the database to add their details, as well as the password-controlled edit facility. During May, all libraries with current entries were sent details of the new site, together with their password, and a printout of their current entry. Those with web access can now make use of their password to update and expand their entries. Those without access to the Internet can send their details by mail or email, for updating of the entries at the National Library. Photographs of participating libraries can now be incorporated in the LAP records—you can see examples in the records for the National Library of Bhutan, and the National Library of the Cook Islands. The updated entries for Pacific countries will feature in a new edition of the printed Directory of Libraries and Archives in the Pacific Islands. Arlene Cohen from the University of Guam has funding from IFLA to produce the printed directory, which is planned for the end of this year. It is hoped all libraries will take the opportunity to provide updates to their entries, and already quite a number of new entries have been received, and many existing ones updated.
