Revolution
or Evolution? Australian
Committee on Cataloguing Registrations are now open for the ‘Revolution or Evolution’ seminar to be held from 1.00 to 5.00 pm on 2 February 2004 at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre. This seminar is being organised by the Australian Committee on Cataloguing as a professional development event for Australian cataloguers, metadata creators and system developers. Registration fees are only $75.00 (ALIA members) and $95.00 (non-members). The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) report was published by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) in 1998 <http://www.ifla.org/VII/s13/frbr/frbr.pdf>. FRBR provides a new conceptual model of bibliographic metadata that relates the content of the record to its various uses. The model describes the various entities within bibliographic metadata that are of most interest to users. It also identifies the relationships between these entities. Instead of a flat record structure, the FRBR model describes a four level hierarchy of bibliographic entities: work, expression, manifestation and item. FRBR arguably has the potential to revolutionise cataloguing and metadata creation, library systems and the library users’ experience. This seminar will provide an introduction to FRBR concepts and a description of Australian FRBR implementation and research projects. It will feature a keynote address by Barbara Tillett, Chief, Cataloging Policy and Support Office, Library of Congress. Marie-Louise Ayres from the National Library of Australia will discuss the implementation of FRBR concepts in the Austlit service and other projects. Bemal Rajapatirana from Kinetica will describe the National Library of Australia’s research into the application of FRBR concepts within the National Bibliographic Database.
