New Catalogue and Website for National Library
The National Library’s new Voyager library management system went live on 3 December, and at the same time a totally new website was launched. Major changes were made—not just a facelift but a complete restructure.
The Voyager catalogue has a more attractive search interface than its Dynix predecessor, and offers great flexibility. Users can search the entire collection or limit the search to the collection of their choice—books, journals, pictures, manuscripts, newspapers, oral history, maps or music. It is also possible to limit the search to the language of choice, enabling better access to the Library’s rich Asian Collections. Another innovation is that if an item has been digitised or is available in electronic form the search results will automatically include an image.
The new website has been substantially restructured with clearer navigation paths and breadcrumb trails to guide users. Many of these changes reflect feedback from the Library’s useability studies conducted over the past year. There is also a search box on every page which allows searchers to do a combined search of the whole catalogue and the website.
For catalogue users on-site, items from the collection can be requested online,
while for remote users the new online Copies Direct service is accessible from
every search screen, providing fee-based copies of articles, chapters
of books, pictures, maps, manuscripts or transcripts direct to the user.
Talks and online tutorials have been provided by the Library’s Information Services staff to guide users around the new website and the new catalogue. For more information, please call Information Services on (02) 62621266
