Welcome to the first exclusively online issue of Gateways
Welcome to Gateways online, the first exclusively electronic issue of the National Library of Australia’s bimonthly magazine for the library community.
Gateways has a long history at the National Library. First published in 1993, it was itself preceded by the respected ABC (Acquisitions, Bibliography, Cataloguing) News, which ran from 1979 to 1992. Electronic versions of each printed issue of Gateways were launched in 1995, with the first version of the National Library’s website. In the past nine years, however, the importance of the website as a mechanism for service delivery, particularly to libraries and library professionals, has grown. In part to reflect that, this issue, number 67, will see the magazine fully embrace the online format.
Over the years, Gateways has aimed to provide the library community, both nationally and internationally, with information about the Library’s services and activities, our collections and our people. We will continue to do that and in this issue you can read about developments in Kinetica, PANDORA, and web archiving. This issue also offers expanded access to our collection material. For example, from Marie-Louise Ayres’ article on the Cooperative Digitisation of Australian Printed Music, you can explore the digitised sheet music collection. Our bimonthly listing of ‘Highlights of What’s New on the National Library Website’ is also included online for the first time and is fully interactive with the website.
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of Gateways.
— Jan Fullerton, Director-General, National Library of Australia
