Back in 2002, the National Libraries of Singapore and Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding which reflected the close ties and collaboration between the two national libraries.
In December 2003, the two libraries launched reciprocal access to their national union catalogues for Australian and Singapore libraries. Kinetica users can now access the Singapore National Union Catalogue (SNUC) through KineticaWeb. The SNUC consists of bibliographic records representing the collections of over 70 libraries in Singapore, and provides a rich source of Chinese, Malay and Tamil language material.
SNUC is the sixth international database to be added to the Kinetica service, and increases the access for Australian libraries to specialist databases to assist in expanding library collaboration through international networks using the Kinetica service.
The database will be available to all Kinetica customers on a trial basis for 6 months, starting in December 2003. The database will appear as a choice on the KineticaWeb database selection screen, and users will not be charged for searches during the trial period.
A guide to searching on the SNUC has been published at <www.nla.gov.au/kinetica/manuals/searching_snuc.html>.
In Australia, the database was launched by His Excellency Mr Joseph Koh (High
Commissioner, Republic of Singapore) and Jan Fullerton (Director-General, NLA).
In Singapore, Mr Beh Chew Leng launched access to the Australian National Bibliographic
Service for users of the National Library Board of Singapore’s Singapore Integrated
Library Automation Services (SILAS) at the SILAS Users' Meeting.
