New!: Shopping Online at the National Library

In December 2003, the National Library launched its new website. Completely restructured, the website addresses many of the access issues identified in testing earlier versions. As well as providing a new Library catalogue and improving access to the Library’s web resources, the new website provided an opportunity to enhance the Library’s online shopping facilities.

Visitors to the new online shop, which sells books and other merchandise published by the National Library, will discover both a new look and a number of new features. The most significant of these is the ability to order and make credit card payments online. Credit card details are encrypted using secure server technologies and are only made accessible to authorised staff members.

Visitors will also notice improved searching facilities—it is now easier to find a book or gift card with limited information. New releases are easy to locate and the shop’s front page highlights products on a rotating basis. Details about books have been extended and the site links to information about the Library’s publishing program and the websites of other Australian publishers and booksellers.

Users of the Library’s new ‘one search’ facility may have also noticed that Library publications and merchandise are included in search results.
